What is a vCard QR code?
A vCard QR code encodes a contact card in the vCard format - an open standard for contact information supported by every modern smartphone. When scanned, the phone prompts the user to save the contact to their address book. No app required. No AirDrop, no Bluetooth pairing, no NFC tap.
The full vCard format supports: first/last name, organization, job title, multiple phone numbers (mobile, work, home), multiple emails, website, physical address, birthday, photo, and social profiles. You include only the fields you want to share.
vCard 3.0 vs 4.0
Use VERSION:3.0 for maximum compatibility. All iOS and Android versions that support QR scanning accept vCard 3.0. Some older Android phones mishandle 4.0 fields, and there's no practical benefit to 4.0 for most contact cards.
VERSION:4.0 adds support for Unicode property values, KIND (for organizations vs. individuals), and some relationship fields. If you need these and your audience is guaranteed to be on modern devices, 4.0 is fine. For business cards distributed to the general public, stick with 3.0.
When to use a vCard QR code
- Business cards - The primary use case. Recipients scan once and have your complete contact info, no typing.
- Badges and lanyards - Conference attendees scan each other's badges during conversations.
- Email signature - Embed a vCard QR so mobile recipients can save your contact in one tap.
- Printed mailers - Sales prospects can save your details from a postcard.
- Tradeshow materials - Any printed item where you want contact details to persist.
